Mains Electricity: a Good Thing, Clearly…

So the theoretical immediacy of this medium has been slightly kiboshed by the near-total absence of electricity and mobile reception in our first tropical idyll, Long Beach, Koh Chang, which is, on balance, a beautiful thing, and surprisingly rare.

It will be a shame when the change comes, although I guess, as with so much stuff, we will wonder how we ever did without it rather than mourning the loss of a perhaps already artificial solitude.

We are all of five days in and I’m really pleased that, so far, we are both enjoying ourselves, and each other’s company, neither, to be frank, a given.

I actively ducked out of iPods, Kindle and DS, because the kind of lo-fi travel my parents took for granted is already dying, and by the time Z has his own kids, will be dead.

Although we both have laptops and mobiles, so it’s hardly back to basics. But it does mean you look out of the window, rather than staring at a screen, and you read, rather than flick from one source to another and write in a book not on a screen and, I think, engage a little more.

But, hell, here I am, stealing someone’s wifi, and he is happy as larry watching the first movie of the hols, in a town where mains electricity arrived four years ago and no house goes without its candles.

Fantastic to be reading this Theo. A tropical idyll & lo- fi lifestyle, albeit a temporary one, sounds like what most of the Western world is now longing for. Mish xx
